INFORMATION

Owned by the brothers Aapo and Mikko Pekari, “Taikalyhty” or the old bookshop is located near Lemi church. The brothers also run a famous bookshop and art gallery, “Laterna Magica”, in Helsinki. In the summer, the Pekari brothers sell books from behind the shop counters which are over a hundred years old. The shop is in fact Finland’s oldest country shop still in operation. At the end of the 19th century, merchandise, mail and news of all kinds arrived from St. Petersburg and Vyborg, via Luumäki station, to the landing stage in Lahnajärvi. These days the old grocer’s shop which once offered a vast range of goods has changed into an Aladdin’s cave of book treasures: in “Taikalyhty”, you might just make some astonishing book finds! “Taikalyhty” is open during the summer from Tuesday to Sunday 12.00-16.00 (closed on Monday).
